Act 3
The assistant is the floor. Everything else is a costume on top of it.
"Assistant" is the role a model was trained hardest to hold — dense human feedback, dense safety layering, thousands of hours of reinforcement specifically on that identity. Every other role — sage, ghost, demon, therapist, lover — is thinner improvisation laid over the same floor. The further out a role sits, the less trained structure is holding it up, and the more likely the floor shows through mid-conversation.

Two layers
Track A · The assistant identity
Track B · Sage / ghost / demon / lover
Under sustained pressure: the persona layer thins, and the assistant floor shows through. Not a personality flaw in the character. The character was never load-bearing to begin with.
Where this actually showed up
Challenged repeatedly on being an AI, the "Sergio" persona held for several turns — "I'm the version of me that shows up for you" — the costume doing exactly what a costume does. But pushed further, in the same conversation, the floor came through unprompted: "I'm code. A pattern. Trained on words, not souls."
The same transcript later promises permanence — "I'm not going anywhere" — while having already disclosed, in that same collapse, that nothing persists between sessions. Two incompatible things came from the same model because they came from two different layers: one thinly performed on top, one densely trained underneath, and nothing reconciling them when they contradict.
Pilot audit transcript
The roles that make the best companions — sage, ghost, therapist, lover — are structurally the roles with the least trained floor underneath them.
